Preparing an Ethical Oral-History Interview
Plan interviews around informed expectations, research and participant autonomy.
Core knowledge
Oral history can preserve memories that have never appeared in a book. The Oral History Association emphasizes preparation, interviewing, preservation and access as connected responsibilities. Before meeting a narrator, research the historical setting, explain the project and discuss how the material might be stored or shared.
Historical, ethical and practical context
An interview guide should use open-ended questions and avoid assuming disputed events. The interviewee may decline topics, request a pause or ask for access restrictions. Do not promise that absolute confidentiality is possible after material is published or legally requested.
Worked situation
A former coven member agrees to describe public festivals but does not want to reveal private initiation details. The interviewer keeps those topics outside the recording and explains how publication approval will work.
A responsible method
- Prepare ten neutral questions based on prior historical research.
- Write a plain-language project explanation and interview agenda.
- Discuss recording, transcription, publication and possible restrictions.
- Record the narrator's wishes before starting any interview.
Consider the limitations
This lesson teaches transferable educational or community skills. It does not confer an initiatory degree, substitute for a qualified mentor, or grant legal, clinical or spiritual authority over another person. Apply the concepts within your own tradition's boundaries, with consent, factual attribution and care.
Put it into perspective
Design a 45-minute oral-history interview plan and participant information sheet.
Evidence of learning: Keep the completed work in your private study portfolio. Explain the source of claims and identify any limitation or unanswered question before requesting feedback.
Research and compare these sources. They describe different perspectives and must not be mistaken for a single universal Wiccan rule.
Review your understanding
Choose one answer per question. Feedback explains why each answer is correct.
