First Quarter and Waxing Gibbous
Observe growing illumination and avoid confusing an astronomical quarter with a calendar week.
Core knowledge
First Quarter names the Moon's position roughly one-quarter of the way through its synodic cycle. Approximately half of the visible disk appears lit; the term does not mean that one-quarter of the disk is illuminated. The waxing gibbous phase follows as more than half of the disk becomes visible in sunlight.
Historical, ethical and practical context
Traditional and modern rituals can attach themes such as effort or preparation to this part of the cycle. These interpretations should be described as symbolic associations, not proven causes of human motivation or biological behavior.
Worked situation
A classmate labels every half-lit Moon a 'First Quarter.' The instructor demonstrates that Last Quarter also appears half illuminated but occurs during waning and requires a different position in the sequence.
A responsible method
- Compare first and last quarter in a phase diagram.
- Record approximate illumination on three consecutive evenings.
- Write a short explanation of waxing versus waning.
- Use a journal to distinguish the Moon's position from your intentions.
Consider the limitations
This lesson teaches transferable educational or community skills. It does not confer an initiatory degree, substitute for a qualified mentor, or grant legal, clinical or spiritual authority over another person. Apply the concepts within your own tradition's boundaries, with consent, factual attribution and care.
Put it into perspective
Make a two-panel comparison of First Quarter and Last Quarter with correct geometry and meanings.
