MOON & NATURE / LESSON 1

The Earth–Moon–Sun System

Learn the physical geometry behind the lunar phases.

Core knowledge

The Moon orbits Earth while both Earth and the Moon move around the Sun. We see different fractions of the Moon's sunlit hemisphere during this motion, which produces phases. The Moon does not produce its own visible light, and its changing appearance is not caused by Earth's shadow during an ordinary monthly phase cycle.

Historical, ethical and practical context

An average synodic month, measured between corresponding lunar phases, lasts about 29.53 days. A sidereal month, measured relative to the stars, is shorter. The difference reflects Earth's motion around the Sun and is useful when checking claims about precise ritual calendars.

Worked situation

A student sees the Moon at half illumination and assumes it must be a first quarter. An observation of whether the illuminated portion is waxing or waning, together with a reliable almanac, helps identify the phase correctly.

A responsible method

  1. Draw the positions of Sun, Earth and Moon in four main phases.
  2. Label the illuminated hemisphere and the part visible from Earth.
  3. Compare the terms synodic and sidereal month.
  4. Check one claim against an astronomy reference rather than an astrology chart.

Consider the limitations

This lesson teaches transferable educational or community skills. It does not confer an initiatory degree, substitute for a qualified mentor, or grant legal, clinical or spiritual authority over another person. Apply the concepts within your own tradition's boundaries, with consent, factual attribution and care.

YOUR STUDY PRACTICE

Put it into perspective

Make a labeled phase diagram with four positions and a 150-word explanation of sunlight geometry.

Evidence of learning: Keep the completed work in your private study portfolio. Explain the source of claims and identify any limitation or unanswered question before requesting feedback.
