MYTHOLOGY & COMPARATIVE RELIGION / LESSON 5

Cernunnos and the Modern Horned God

Distinguish ancient iconography from a major modern Wiccan spiritual symbol.

A limited ancient record

Cernunnos is a named figure on an ancient Gaulish monument often identified as the Pillar of the Boatmen in what is now Paris. Images of antlered figures elsewhere are sometimes connected with him, but names and identities cannot always be established with certainty.

Ancient depictions leave many questions about cult practice, theological meanings and local variation. An image of antlers does not prove that every later Horned God concept came from one continuous institution.

Modern Wiccan interpretation

The Horned God is an important symbol in many Wiccan traditions, often interpreted through nature, cycles and divine masculinity. Theological meanings differ among practitioners.

A careful comparison can explain the ancient name, the surviving artifact and the symbolism adopted by twentieth-century Wiccans without treating them as identical.
