Observation, Interpretation and Source Notes
Develop the habit of telling facts from personal meaning.
Core knowledge
A statement such as 'I saw a waning crescent at dawn' records an observation. 'It made me think about change' is a personal interpretation. 'This lunar phase guarantees new money' is an empirical claim requiring evidence that symbolic meaning alone does not provide. A thoughtful journal can hold all these categories without mixing them.
Historical, ethical and practical context
Write the name of the book, author, date or website when you adopt a factual claim. If several sources disagree, record the disagreement and investigate. Good notebooks reveal a developing understanding rather than presenting every early guess as permanent truth.
Worked situation
A student writes that an herb is universally associated with protection. Later they find conflicting sources. Instead of hiding the inconsistency, they identify each author's tradition and date.
A responsible method
- Divide a page into 'Observed', 'Read', 'Interpreted' and 'Uncertain'.
- Make one entry in each category using a recent study topic.
- Add a citation for the source-based claim.
- Review the entry one week later to note any correction.
Consider the limitations
This lesson teaches transferable educational or community skills. It does not confer an initiatory degree, substitute for a qualified mentor, or grant legal, clinical or spiritual authority over another person. Apply the concepts within your own tradition's boundaries, with consent, factual attribution and care.
Put it into perspective
Write a four-column study entry with three facts, two interpretations and one open question.
Evidence of learning: Keep the completed work in your private study portfolio. Explain the source of claims and identify any limitation or unanswered question before requesting feedback.
Research and compare these sources. They describe different perspectives and must not be mistaken for a single universal Wiccan rule.
Review your understanding
Choose one answer per question. Feedback explains why each answer is correct.
