The Role of Words and Silence
Write original language that is understandable and respectful of different beliefs.
Writing with care
Some rituals include prayers, invocations, poetry, songs or spoken instructions. Original writing can be direct rather than archaic. Explain symbolic language if participants may interpret deities or natural forces differently.
Quoting a published modern ritual often involves copyright and attribution questions. Avoid silently borrowing large passages, and never circulate private group liturgy without permission. A concise original text may be more effective than a copied formula.
When silence is enough
A moment of quiet observation is a valid reflective practice. Some people prefer a journal entry, a gesture, or listening rather than speaking in front of others.
Give participants permission to pass if invited to share. Emotional disclosure should never be demanded, and a leader should not promise psychological or medical results from the exercise.
Put it into perspective
Compose a brief original invocation of gratitude that does not demand agreement with one theology.
