Online Community Safety and Privacy
Apply safeguarding rules to forums, chat, classes and private messages.
Core knowledge
Online spaces can enable good teaching but also unwanted attention, coercion and disclosure of personal information. A school should use role-based access, protect authentication, minimize collected data and explain moderation standards. People need an accessible method to report harassment without having to post accusations publicly.
Historical, ethical and practical context
Photos of rituals, personal spiritual histories and private journal entries can reveal religious affiliation or other sensitive information. Do not make student journals public by default. Moderators should document relevant incidents securely and avoid retaining unnecessary intimate details.
Worked situation
A member shares another person's initiation story and identifiable photo without permission. Moderators remove the material, notify affected people as appropriate and follow the published policy rather than allowing the content because it seems interesting.
A responsible method
- Write a privacy-preserving moderation rule for personal religious disclosures.
- Define who can access incident reports and how long they are retained.
- Set account protections and a process for blocking unwanted contact.
- Offer accessible methods for asking that images or comments be removed.
Consider the limitations
This lesson teaches transferable educational or community skills. It does not confer an initiatory degree, substitute for a qualified mentor, or grant legal, clinical or spiritual authority over another person. Apply the concepts within your own tradition's boundaries, with consent, factual attribution and care.
Put it into perspective
Draft online conduct, moderation and privacy policies for a class discussion forum.
Evidence of learning: Keep the completed work in your private study portfolio. Explain the source of claims and identify any limitation or unanswered question before requesting feedback.
Research and compare these sources. They describe different perspectives and must not be mistaken for a single universal Wiccan rule.
Review your understanding
Choose one answer per question. Feedback explains why each answer is correct.
