The Four Suits and Everyday Themes
Study suit patterns without reducing life to four stereotypes.
A vocabulary of concerns
Modern interpretations often associate Wands with endeavor, Cups with relationship, Swords with analysis and Pentacles with material life. The associations provide a starting vocabulary that can be tested against each card's actual picture.
A disagreement can involve emotion, practical consequences and creative action simultaneously. Tarot imagery is flexible, and the reader should avoid presenting suit keywords as a diagnosis.
The numbers within suits
The progression from Ace through Ten may suggest beginning, tension, development and culmination. Court cards introduce characters or modes of behavior; their titles and gendered imagery vary across decks.
Pay attention to contrasts within a suit, such as the generosity of Six of Pentacles and the guarded position of Four of Pentacles, instead of applying the same general meaning to both.
Put it into perspective
Compare a Four and a Six from one suit, describing how their pictured situations differ.
