Elements, Directions and Symbols
Explore the Western esoteric language of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit.
A symbolic system
Many modern Wiccan rituals refer to Earth, Air, Fire and Water as classical elements. These are historical symbolic categories, not scientific descriptions of the chemical composition of matter. A fifth principle, Spirit, may appear in interpretations of the pentagram.
Frequently encountered correspondences pair Earth with North, Air with East, Fire with South, and Water with West. These are common but not universal, and individual covens or regional traditions may use different schemes.
Understanding symbols in context
The pentagram is a five-pointed star with a long and varied history; a pentacle is frequently represented as the star enclosed in a circle. Meanings assigned to these images vary with religious, magical and historical context.
Before claiming that a meaning is ancient, ask when and where it is documented. A symbol may be old even when a particular interpretation is modern. This does not make contemporary symbolic use less personally significant.
Put it into perspective
Create a correspondences chart. For each element and direction, identify one source or tradition rather than labeling the system universally binding.
