HISTORY & HERITAGE / LESSON 3

Dating Materials and Establishing Provenance

Document the origin and transmission of a record.

Core knowledge

A photograph without a date, a newsletter copied from another website, or a transcript stripped of its recording context is difficult to interpret. Provenance includes creator, date, location, chain of custody and rights information. A digital copy should retain the filename and metadata supplied by its custodian whenever possible. Estimated dates and uncertain attributions should be labeled as estimates, not silently converted into certainty.

Historical and ethical context

Archival practice is especially important for small religious groups whose records may be scattered among private homes and former members. Taking possession of an item does not automatically grant publication rights, and a scanned document can contain private names, addresses or rituals that require restrictions.

Worked example

A student finds a 1970s-looking poster online and calls it a definitive 1972 coven announcement. The archive instead records a tentative decade, the web source, an unknown original owner and a pending verification task.

Apply what you learned

  1. Create a cataloguing sheet with title, creator, date, extent and origin.
  2. Add rights holder, permitted uses and access restrictions.
  3. Record whether the object is original, reproduction or transcription.
  4. Add a field for uncertainties and supporting evidence.

Limits and responsibility

This is public educational preparation. It is not initiatory training conferred by a lineage, a professional credential, or a guarantee of supernatural or clinical outcomes. Use sources accurately, obtain consent and refer specialized matters to qualified people.

YOUR STUDY PRACTICE

Put it into perspective

Catalog three hypothetical records using the same metadata standard. Include an explanation of how a later researcher could verify or correct each entry.
