Define Wicca Without Erasing Its Diversity

A source-aware learning challenge with a practical assignment and a private reflection space.

What to understand

Wicca emerged as a publicly visible modern Pagan religion in twentieth-century Britain. It includes initiatory, eclectic, communal, and solitary forms, but no organization governs the beliefs of everyone who uses the name. A respectful explanation makes room for practitioners who understand deities literally, symbolically, or in other ways. It also distinguishes Wicca from witchcraft: witchcraft is a wider category of practices and identities, some religious and some not. Before studying rituals or making a Book of Shadows, clarify the categories you are using.

Your practical assignment

Write three definitions in your own words: Wicca, witchcraft, and contemporary Paganism. Give one example of overlap and one example of difference. Then write a sentence that explains why a modern religion need not prove uninterrupted prehistoric origins to have meaning.

RESEARCH LEAD

Use this resource for context, and compare sources where possible. It is not an endorsement of all claims made in related traditions.
