Practice Supportive Listening and Referral

A source-aware learning challenge with a practical assignment and a private reflection space.

What to understand

Spiritual leaders may be approached when people are grieving, isolated, confused, or frightened. Listening respectfully does not make someone a therapist, physician, or crisis clinician. Boundaries require honesty about competence, privacy expectations, and when to refer someone to qualified support. A leader should avoid pressuring a person to accept a spiritual explanation for an experience. Teaching students how to recognize a need for professional help is part of responsible leadership preparation, not a failure of spiritual care.

Your practical assignment

Write a scripted five-minute response to a fictional member who says they are overwhelmed after a loss. Include listening, a nonjudgmental question, an offer of practical support, a professional referral when appropriate, and a statement of your limits.

RESEARCH LEAD

Use this resource for context, and compare sources where possible. It is not an endorsement of all claims made in related traditions.
