Learn the Eight Sabbats

A source-aware learning challenge with a practical assignment and a private reflection space.

What to understand

The familiar Wiccan Wheel of the Year combines festivals near solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarter dates. Samhain, Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lughnasadh, and Mabon are commonly named, but their histories and adoption dates differ. A modern calendar can be meaningful without being an unchanged ancient calendar. When studying each festival, distinguish its astronomical or seasonal timing, older local customs, and contemporary religious interpretations. Climate and hemisphere also matter: a Northern Hemisphere celebration of early spring may coincide with autumn for someone living south of the equator.

Your practical assignment

Draw an eight-spoke year wheel. Put each Sabbat in its usual Northern Hemisphere position, then annotate the next upcoming festival with the way your local season actually looks. Name one custom whose historical origin you still need to research.
