Observe the Actual Moon

A source-aware learning challenge with a practical assignment and a private reflection space.

What to understand

The Moon's appearance changes as sunlight illuminates different portions of the lunar hemisphere visible from Earth. A synodic cycle averages about 29.53 days. Many Wiccans attach spiritual meanings to full or new moons, and some gather for Esbats. Neither the astronomical calculation nor the religious interpretation should be mistaken for the other. Careful observation is a powerful way to learn: the sky can be recorded with dates, conditions, and source comparisons rather than assumed patterns about health, mood, or luck.

Your practical assignment

Record today's lunar phase from a reliable astronomical source, the date and time in your local time zone, and what you can actually observe. If the sky is not visible, record that honestly. Repeat twice later in the month.
