Boundaries, Dual Relationships and Dependency
Prevent manipulation, favoritism, and inappropriate personal leverage.
Core knowledge
Mentors may become friends or community members with students, particularly in small spiritual groups. Overlap is sometimes unavoidable, but it should be acknowledged and managed. A teacher who also employs, houses, dates or lends money to a student may be unable to assess them impartially.
Historical, ethical and practical context
Progression criteria must not depend on personal intimacy, costly gifts, unpaid labor or public praise. A healthy mentorship encourages learners to think independently, seek other sources and move on when their goals change. Ending a learning relationship is not a betrayal of spiritual belief.
Worked situation
A mentor suggests that students who volunteer at their private business receive favorable evaluations. The organization separates those responsibilities, documents the conflict and chooses an independent assessor.
A responsible method
- List circumstances that create dependency or conflicts of interest.
- Write a clear rule against exchanging advancement for personal favors.
- Arrange independent assessment when a dual relationship exists.
- Provide a respectful process for a student to change mentors.
Consider the limitations
This lesson teaches transferable educational or community skills. It does not confer an initiatory degree, substitute for a qualified mentor, or grant legal, clinical or spiritual authority over another person. Apply the concepts within your own tradition's boundaries, with consent, factual attribution and care.
Put it into perspective
Draft a mentor boundary policy and practice describing it to a student who wishes to leave the program.
Evidence of learning: Keep the completed work in your private study portfolio. Explain the source of claims and identify any limitation or unanswered question before requesting feedback.
Research and compare these sources. They describe different perspectives and must not be mistaken for a single universal Wiccan rule.
